Plans have been submitted for the installation of a temporary weighbridge and portacabin and the provision of concrete surfacing to part of the access way and track, including part of the U3149, leading to the operational Flusco Landfill Site. The application has been made on behalf of Seletia (F) Limited, the owner and operator of the landfill, following the purchase earlier this year of landfill operations from Cumbria Waste Group.
The existing weighbridge and office at the site will continue to be used by Cumbria Waste Group to support its recycling operations at the Materials Recycling Facility, which remains within the Flusco landholding but is operated as a separate business. The new weighbridge and portacabin are required to serve the landfill operations and would be located along the access track leading to the tipping area.
According to the planning agent, both the weighbridge and portacabin would remain in place for the duration of the landfill and restoration operations, which are permitted until 2032 under the current site operating conditions. The proposals are intended to assist in the efficient functioning of the permitted operations and are not expected to result in any changes to throughput, HGV movements, operating hours or access arrangements.
The application is being determined through the Cumbria Waste and Minerals planning process and does not appear on the standard Westmorland and Furness Planning Portal. Details can be viewed online and consultation responses made via https://goto.penrith.town/Flusco-planning-application
As part of the consultation process, Westmorland and Furness Council’s Environmental Health Officer said: “I have no comments to make with regards to this application.” The council’s Historic Environment Officer said: “I have no objections and I do not wish to make any recommendations.”
Local residents have recently raised concerns about an increase in noise and the volume of HGV traffic at the landfill site in the last few weeks.
