Fire Service Confirm Town Centre incident was due to Carbon Monoxide incident

Cumbria Fire Services have given an update on Thursday evening’s incident that resulted in the town centre sealed off by police as emergency services responded to an incident in Little Dockray.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue were called to a reported Carbon Monoxide incident at Little Dockray, Penrith at 7pm following a Carbon Monoxide Alarm being triggered in a property.

One man was taken to hospital as a result of the incident with the town centre sealed off to all traffic and pedestrians for hours while safety checks were carried out with Cumbria Fire and Rescue working with Network Gas, Cumbria Constabulary, and the Ambulance Service, to sequentially go through each property to ensure that there was no carbon monoxide present.

On our fire crews were greeted by the caller who had no symptoms but their carbon monoxide alarm was sounding.

The fire crew committed two breathing apparatus wearers with gas and carbon monoxide checking equipment to search the property and investigate what was happening.

They discovered high readings of carbon monoxide in the building leading to them evacuated the whole building and discovered the carbon monoxide was affecting at least nine other properties.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue have thanked all services for their help and support in dealing with the incident.

The fire service said “This reminds the public of having carbon monoxide and smoke alarm detectors for any solid fuel or heating appliance.”
