Penrith Town Council will hold an extraordinary meeting on Monday afternoon to consider a report on Westmorland & Furness Council Community Governance Review of the town council that could see changes to how the town is represented from 2027.
Councillors will be asked to approve a draft response to the review with proposals to reduce the number of councillors in two Penrith wards while increasing representation in Carleton.
Under the proposals, Penrith West — which covers Castletown, Brunswick Square and parts of Townhead — and Penrith East, which includes Scaws, Beacon Edge and the New Streets, would each see their number of councillors cut from three to two .
While the town council Carleton Ward would gain two more councillors.
The proposed new numbers of councillors for each ward are: Carleton – 4, East – 2, North – 4, Pategill – 1, South – 2, West – 2
The proposals come as voters in Penrith West and Penrith South prepare to head to the polls next month to elect new councillors for each ward, following the recent resignations of two town councillors.
