Emergency Overnight Closure of M6 Due to Southbound Carriageway Breaking Up at Clifton

National Highways have announced that the M6 between junction 40 and 39 will be closed overnight on Tuesday 27th January from 10pm until 6am Wednesday 28th January.

The emergency closure is due to the Southbound carriageway of the M6 breaking up through the Clifton / Lowther Bridge roadworks.

National Highways said they “have been filling the potholes under rolling blocks, but with the recent cold/wet weather cannot keep on top of it and machine patching is required”.

They have secured resource to carry out the works on Tuesday night next week, and will be closing the M6 overnight and using the A6 diversion route, to facilitate the works.

The emergency closure comes just two weeks after National Highways celebrated reopening the section of road 13 hours early from the Clifton Railway bridge closure.

The closure will be between 10pm and 6am as usual and will deploy the speed warning signs as agreed.

With such short notice they will however be unable to secure speed camera van on this occasion.

National Highways have said they understand this is less than ideal coming of the back of the rail closures, but they have no option but to carry out the works to keep the carriageway safe.
