Doors Close on over 100 Years of Banking at Penrith Barclays Branch

Over a century of Banking history ended in Penrith on Wednesday at 12noon as Barclays Bank located in the prominent Market Place building that has been a bank for over a century closed its doors for the last time.

The prominent town centre sandstone building became the Bank of Liverpool and Martins Limited in 1918, later becoming Martins Bank Limited in 1928 with Barclays Bank arriving in Penrith on the 15 December 1969.

Barclays have submitted a planning application to Westmorland and Furness Council to enable the decommissioning of the bank with the removal of signage and ATM and internal structures.

Following todays closure Barclays Bank will operate a cashless Barclays Local service Initially located at the George Hotel, Customers will be able to access a range of in-person support such as help with digital banking, financial reviews, balance checks, transfers and bill payments. 

The Barclays Local is cashless so cash banking transactions will need to be completed at the Post Office by customers or at another branch of Barclays with Carlisle the closest remaining branch.

Days and times the Penrith Barclays local will be available are yet to be confirmed by the bank.
