Staff and Crews at Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service headquarters in Penrith joined colleagues across the globe today (11 September) in paying tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks, 24 years on.
On 11 September 2001, the world watched in shock as the World Trade Center in New York was attacked and collapsed. A total of 2,977 people lost their lives, including 412 emergency service personnel who died while trying to save others.
Among them were 343 members of the New York City Fire Department and New York Fire Patrol. In the years since, more than 400 further deaths have been linked to 9/11-related illnesses among first responders.
Staff and crews from Penrith Community Fire Station gathered outside the station to pause, reflect, and observe a period of silence in memory of those who died. The act of remembrance was mirrored at fire stations across the world.
