Polling stations closed at 10pm and shortly after 10:15 verification count of the first votes in the town council by election got underway along with the Eden area votes from 83 polling stations for the Cumbria Police Fire Crime Commissioner.
Votes counted in Penrith will be added to votes counted in Kendal and Barrow to give the vote total in Westmorland and Furness that will be added to the votes for Cumberland.
The final results will be announced by the Cumbria PFCC returning officer in Whitehaven on Friday morning.
The town council by election result should be announced before midnight by the deputy returning officer at Penrith Leisure centre.
