Council unable to accept sofas and soft furniture as landfill ban starts in new year

Council unable to accept sofas and soft furniture as landfill ban starts in new year.

Cumbria County Council has announced that due to short-notice implementation of new legislation relating to waste containing certain types of polluting materials, from 1 January 2023 upholstered domestic seating can no longer be sent to landfill for disposal.

To allow the councils Household Waste Recycling Centres to make arrangements to manage this change, they will be unable to accept such material between 1 January and 23 January.

This affects disposal of:

Sofas and armchairs

Sofa beds and futons

Kitchen and dining room chairs

Stools and foot stools

Home office chairs

Bean bags,

floor and sofa cushions

Cumbria County Council said “We recognise that this will be disruptive for the public and apologise for the inconvenience this will cause. We are working hard with our contractors, partners and other agencies to improve the situation.”

The changes to the law also affect bulky waste collection services managed by Eden District Council, meaning that the items listed above cannot be included for bulky waste collection.

Eden Council have said they “will contact all those affected by this change as soon as possible to try to arrange collection of any prohibited items before 1 January 2023.”
