Council Set to Approve Spending almost £3 Million on a New Council Owned Solar Farm

Westmorland and Furness Council cabinet will be asked to give approval to fund and construct a 2MW Solar Farm at Barrow in Furness at an estimated cost of £2.781million.

The cabinet will meet at Kendal Town Hall on Tuesday 12th September were cabinet members will be asked to approve the award of a construction contract to a Lancashire based company called Vital Energi Ltd. To build and operate for 24 months a 2MW solar farm at Sandscale Park, Barrow in Furness. Operation after 24 months will be subject to a separate contract.

The land the solar farm is to be constructed on is part of a large area that belongs to the council. Between the A590 and Sandscale Nature reserve.

The solar farm is designed to operate over a 35-year period and the energy production from the solar farm is expected to be 89,258,554 kWh over the 35 year period.

It’s estimated the solar farm will annually generate 2,550,244 kWh of electricity on average each year, for 35 years.

Westmorland and Furness Council hope the solar farm will help the council offset its carbon footprint and help meet the councils net zero ambitions.

£1.081million of the total cost will be through borrowings by the council.

The Westmorland and Furness Council solar farm plans come as Thurrock Council in Essex finds it’s self on the brink of bankruptcy after using millions of public money to invest in a solar farm business, which they hoped would generate extra income.
