Council Says large parts of Penrith Housing Development Will Not Be Allowed Windows that Open

Westmorland and Furness Council officers have today said people living in houses near the WestCoast Main Line and M6 should not have windows that open because if windows are allowed to open in large parts of a new housing development occupants could suffer from a bad nights sleep leading to possible cardiovascular and other health problems due to noise.

Planning officers have said future occupants of a Persimmon homes development in Penrith face health risks if windows in large part of the development are allowed to open.

The council planning committee meeting at Voreda House on Thursday Morning was asked to consider removal of conditions that will see houses built with windows that will not be allowed to open.

The planning committee chair Cllr Simpkins said “we must act to protect the children who can’t close a window and act to protect the council from legal action in the future.”

Cllr McCall said he felt the council was being condescending to people by preventing people from opening windows in the properties.

Cllr Murray said he “would not dream of buying a house that he could not open windows”.

Members of the planning committee voted to follow officer recommendations to refuse the application with 6 in favour and two abstentions.
