Council contractor have started the delivery of wheelie bins this week to more than 500 properties in the Carleton Meadows area of Penrith.
The area has been chosen for a wheelie bin pilot scheme by the council to test how residents find using the wheelie bins instead of blue bags for general waste.
The pilot scheme has been arranged following feedback from a recent Community Conversation by the council on waste and recycling collections, when many residents in the Eden area said they were interested in seeing how wheelie bins could work instead of the current blue bag system.
The Carleton Meadows area has been chosen for the pilot because it has a mix of types of houses and access arrangements, so Westmorland and Furness council can test collection methods, assess costs and gather more feedback from residents in the trial area about how they have found using the wheelie bins instead of bags.
Residents in the trial area have been sent a letter by the council with details of the trial, including how they will be able to share their views as the trial progresses.
A spokesperson for the council said “Our Community Conversation – saw 3,000 people share their views on current waste and recycling services in their area, including what they like, what they would like to change and what they’d like to see in the future.”
“The Eden wheelie bin trial is an example of how this feedback is now being used to shape options for how collections will be delivered across the whole of Westmorland and Furness in the future.”
“These options will be subject to further public engagement later this year, and the feedback from the Community Conversation and options engagement will help councillors make a final decision on the new collection model.”
“This will mean all areas of Westmorland and Furness will receive the same waste and recycling collections, at the same frequencies and using the same types of containers.”
Residents can expect to see the first changes being implemented by the end of the year, with the majority of service revisions in place by the end of 2027.
