Council reveals rodent infestation visits to domestic properties made in first year

The number of visits conducted by Westmorland and Furness council in its first year to rat and mice infestations in domestic properties locally has been revealed by the council.

Westmorland and Furness Council has said between 1 April 2023 and 1 April 2024 the number of visits the council carried out locally in the Penrith and Eden area was 188 individual visits to domestic properties with rat or mice infestations.

In Barrow it made 66 domestic visits, the council does not record domestic visits in the South Lakeland area currently as these are counted with commercial the council's visits.

In the Eden area the pest control contractor Rentokil carries out work on behalf of the council as a legacy contract put in place by the former Eden Council, But the authority says it does not operate a pest control service in Barrow or South Lakeland and visits are in an advisory capacity in those areas.

In 2023, many places across the UK saw a noticeable increase in rat infestations. Across the UK in 2023 Local authority pest controllers made 271,343 visits to homes with rat and mice infestations, the equivalent to 743 visits a day.

NHS hospital admissions data shows that 48 individuals were admitted to hospital in 2022/23 having been bitten by a rat in a domestic property.
