Concerns over Future of A66 Upgrade Plans as Secretary of State Fails to give Decision

The plans for the A66 Upgrade have this evening been dealt a further blow and raised concerns about the furure of the A66 upgrade by National Highways.

Today marked the three month deadline for the Secretary of State for Transport to announce his decision on the project’s future.

In a development that unfolded in the last five minutes, the independent Planning Inspectorate, responsible for evaluating the A66 upgrade plans, released a statement that said, "The Application remains with the Secretary of State for consideration. An update on this application will be provided as soon as possible." The cryptic message only deepens the uncertainty surrounding the fate of the project.

Earlier this year the department for transport said the A66 project no longer represented value for money and one of the contractors appointed withdrew from the A66 upgrade project.

There is now no clear indication if and when the Secretary of State will issue a decision on the future of the A66 upgrade.
