Commissioner keeping up the momentum to tackling fly camping in around Lakes

Following a second multi stakeholder meeting to tackle fly-camping, anti-social behaviour and environmental damage across the Lake District, was held earlier this week.

The second meeting took place following public outrage over flycamping and litter around Ullswater last weekend and Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, set out to take action after residents raised concerns.

The multi stakeholder meeting included representatives from Westmorland and Furness Council, Cumberland Council, Cumbria Constabulary, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, United Utilities, Forestry England, National Trust, Lake District National Park Authority, National Highways, and Cumbria Association of Local Councils.

David Allen Cumbria PFCC said: “Since our first meeting, joint patrols have been taking place around hotspot areas in the Lake District, however, I know there’s still more to do.

“Therefore, these patrols will now run later in the day, when issues are more likely to arise.”

Cumbria Police along with stakeholder will hold a public engagement on the shores of Ullswater tomorrow, (Saturday 9th August), with volunteers, mounted patrols and water safety training all taking place.

Work is also underway with Westmorland and Furness Council to introduce a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to give police more enforcement powers to address fly camping and the associated issues around Ullswater and across the Lakedistrict national park in areas in Westmorland and Furness after Cumberland council introduced a Public Space Protection Order to address the issues in the Cumberland areas of the national park.

The commissioner said: “As a keen paddleboarder myself and user of the lakes, I am incredibly frustrated myself with some of the pictures we have seen. To those residents that have got in touch, I hear you and I’m listening.

“That’s why I’ll continue to work with all partners to ensure a clear, joined-up response.

“We can’t solve this alone.”

The commissioner is planning the next meeting with stakeholders on the 21st of August and hopes to give an update after that meeting on efforts to combat the issues.
