Change of Date for M6 Southbound Overnight Closure as part of Bridge Works at Clifton

National Highways began work on Lowther Bridge last month in a project costing £9million to ensure the safety of the bridge that carries the M6 and thousands of vehicles daily across the River Lowther just south of Junction 40.

Lowther Bridge is now over 50 years old and requires substantial repairs to ensure the longevity of the structure, work involves replacing the bridge’s expansion joints, waterproofing the bridge decks and improving drainage. National Highways will also resurface the road and replace road markings on the bridge decks.

Work has already included resurfacing the southbound carriageway of the M6 and starting bridge deck repairs along with a temporary access road also been constructed from the A6 to Lowther Bridge for access during the works. As part of the work National Highways have also built a temporary slip road from the motorway to Network Rail’s site compound at Clifton for Network Rail’s bridge replacement project.

National Highways had planned an overnight closure of the M6 Southbound on the 17th May as part of the Lowther Bridge works but has this week announced the overnight motorway closure will take place on Saturday 10th May to link with Network Rail who are planning to begin bridge pier works on Clifton railway bridge.

The night-time closure on Saturday 10th May of the M6 southbound between junction 40 to 39 will be in place between 10pm Saturday to 6am Sunday.

Signed diversion route for the M6 Southbound traffic will be via J40 along the A66 to Kemplay roundabout onto the A6 to Shap rejoining the M6 at J39, during the closure with speed reduction measures in place along the A6 to minimise disruption on the communities along the route. National Highways is advising road users to plan and allow more time to complete journeys.

National Highways spokes person said "We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience our essential work may cause motorists or residents".
