Mile Lane has today (Friday 1st November) reopened after a 10 week closure to enable the laying of a new high voltage cable along the length of the road as part of work to upgrade the local electricity infrastructure supplying homes and businesses to the South West of Penrith.
The full length of Mile Lane between the A66 and the B5288 Greystoke road was closed in mid August to vehicles and pedestrians for three months to enable Electric Northwest to carry out work along the full length of Mile Lane.
Despite the full closure a number of vehicles have opted to ignore the signage and have faced having to turned around due to contractors blocking the full width of the road.
Work was completed on Wednesday to join up new high voltage cables along the length of mile lane and reinstate the road surface before contractors today removed the road closure signage and cones and opening the road to traffic.
Contractors have now moved across the A66 to continue installing the high voltage cable along Redhills Lane from the junction with the A66 near the Travellodge along the full lengths of the crowd to the junction with the A592 near Rheged for 9 weeks, due to be completed by the 23rd December 2024.
The work that includes work by Electricity Northwest on Greystoke Road and along Newton Road to Netwongate Substation will see the new high voltage cable eventually replace a number of overhead cables in the area that form part of the local grid network.
Despite Mile Lane reopening today drivers are urged to use caution on the road due to a number of trees still blocking parts of the road following Storm Ashley on the 20th October.
