Boundary Commission's final report reaches House of Commons and could mean Penrith is placed in a new constituency

Penrith moves ever closer to forming part of a new Penrith and Solway constituency that will see Penrith and Maryport served by the same MP at the next general election, after final boundary proposals were submitted to the Speaker of the House of Commons earlier today (Tuesday).

However, the Boundary Commission for England's recommendations cannot be made public, until its report has been laid before Parliament.

It means we do not yet know if anything has changed since the most recent consultation, which ended in December.

Then, the Penrith and The Border constituency was scrapped with Penrith placed in a new Penrith and Solway constituency spanning from Penrith to Maryport.

The Boundary Commission for England's 2022 proposal. This may change under the final recommendations.

The next General election must take place before January 2025 and the new constituency areas will take effect at that election. Until then the current area MP’s remain the elected MP for the constituencies they currently represent in Parliament.

The 2022 proposal for Penrith and the wider Cumbria constituencies could change in the final recommendations partially due to the changes in Local government in Cumbria as the seats in the current Boundary commission proposal are named county seats that following the government implemented local government changes in Cumbria no longer reflect the county structure in the area.

The Speaker of the House of Commons will lead the process of laying the final recommendations before Parliament. This is expected to potentially happen as early as Tomorrow, Thursday based on information from our sources in Westminster this evening.

Secretary to the Boundary Commission, Tim Bowden, said today: "We’re pleased to present our recommendations to the Speaker of the House of Commons today. We look forward to being able to publish our recommendations."

The process with then take upto 3 months to complete as the Kings council will be presented with the proposals to give final approval expected by early November.
