Bin Strike set to Continue in Penrith and Eden for Weeks

The current Bin strike by GMB union members over pay is set to continue for weeks as fresh talks between the union and Urbaser who hold the contract for blue bin bag collection in the Eden area fail to reach an agreement.

Urbaser has said that they have met the majority of the union’s initial demands, but still have to find the right resolution for all parties.

Westmorland and Furness Council have said “We are aware that some properties may have not received replacement blue refuse sacks recently as a result of the current Industrial Action being taken by some of the staff of our Refuse Collection contractor. Our contractor has advised that where this situation has arisen and customers have no replacement blue sacks, in which to place their waste for the next collection, they will collect waste in other suitable non-blue sacks until further notice.”

Police had to intervene earlier this week due to striking union members blocking access routes for the firm's vehicles operated by staff brought in from other areas by the firm.

Some of those who are out collecting the bins in Penrith this last week for the firm, have said they have come from as far away as Bolton and in one case London.
