Town Council Supports EV Pavement Trial — But Wants Chargers Out Of Sight

Members of Penrith Town Council’s planning committee will meet on Monday to consider another in a series of planning applications linked to a new EV charging trial in the town.

Applications for properties on Wordsworth Street and Lowther Street have been submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council for the installation of EV charge points connected to on-street vehicles via specially-installed pavement channels.

The channels, cut into the pavement outside the properties, are designed to safely carry charging cables from homes to parked electric vehicles without wires trailing across footpaths.

The scheme forms part of Westmorland and Furness Council’s Trial EV Pavement Channel Project, being carried out in partnership with Kerbo Charge.

Penrith Town Council has submitted its support for one of the applications, but asked that the EV charging units are not installed on the front of properties “for aesthetic reasons” and instead placed in a more discreet location.

The trial is aimed at helping residents without off-street parking charge electric vehicles safely from their homes.

Kerbo Charge’s system uses a small recessed channel built directly into the pavement, allowing charging cables to sit below the walking surface and reducing trip hazards.

The company gained national attention after appearing on Dragons’ Den, where investor Deborah Meaden backed the idea.

“The best inventions solve widespread problems with simple and cost effective solutions and Kerbo Charge does just that,” she said.

The latest applications are due to be considered by councillors on Monday.
