Plans to ‘decommission’ Barclays Bank in Penrith that will close its doors on Wednesday at 12 noon have been submitted to Westmorland and Furness council.

Planning permission is being sought by Barclays to remove existing external signage and branding, along with the external ATM, CCTV camera and burglar alarm.

The banking giant also wants seal its existing night safe internally, along with removing internal counters, all internal furniture and some modern glazing walls and glazing doors on ground floor and first floor of the grade two listed building that is also in the middle of the Penrith conservation area.

The proposed works set out in the planning application the Bank has said are intended to return the building to pre-Barclays occupation as much as it is possible preserving the listed building status.

The application states: “The building has been a Barclays Bank for a number of years, serving the local community during this time. This building is in a prominent central location alongside other businesses and financial institutions within an established town centre community.”

Barclays citied modern ways of banking such as online or telephone as the reason for the bank’s closure along with decline in the number of customers using the branch on a regular basis.

The Barclays Local service, will be located at the George Hotel, Customers will be able to access a range of in-person support such as help with digital banking, financial reviews, balance checks, transfers and bill payments. However the Barclays Local is cashless therefore everyday banking transactions need to be completed at the Post Office.
