The annual meeting of the parish of Penrith will take place next Wednesday 21st May at 6pm Penrith Town Council have announced after a change to the originally announced date by the council.
The Annual Parish Meeting is not a Town Council meeting but a meeting of the local electorate with the agenda for an annual parish meeting a standard one, to give reports on the business of the last 12 months, Penrith Mayor Cllr Dough Lawson will chair the Penrith annual parish meeting and will give a presentation on what the Town Council has been doing, and about projects and priorities going forward.
The annual parish meeting is also an opportunity for residents in the Penrith parish to question the town council and organisations on any issues relating to the town. As the Annual Parish Meeting is not a parish council meeting it is not conducted in the same way or governed by the same rules as a parish council meeting allowing members of the public to make statements on relevant matters during the meeting and a parish poll can be called on any items raised and is used in the meeting.
Following the annual parish meeting at 7pm Penrith Town Council will hold its Annual General Meeting with the first order of business for councillors to elect a chairman and new Mayor of Penrith for next year along with a vice chair and deputy Mayor.
The council members will also be asked to consider and approve a new policy and procedure that will allow the council to grant the Freedom of the Town by awarding the title of honorary freeman or honorary freewoman to individuals.
The granting of the Freedom of the Town is a symbolic presentation, which represents the highest honour a Town can bestow on an individual. The Freedom of the Town is a significant honour, demonstrating trust, loyalty, and a sense of community between a Town and an individual.
The Freedom itself carries no privilege and is purely a non-hereditary honour, reflecting the eminence of the person on whom it is conferred or as recognition of significant and valuable services rendered to the town by that person. As well as councillors proposing individuals for the title, residents of Penrith will be able to make nominations for individuals to be award the title, but they will need to have the support of a Member of the Town Council with a second and third Councillor supporting the nomination.
The annual parish meeting will be held at Unit 2, Church House, Friargate, Penrith between 6:00pm - 7:00pm followed by her annual town council meeting starting at 7pm.
