Amber Health Alerts Issued for Northern England Amid Plunging Temperatures.
The UK is bracing itself for a sharp drop in temperatures as the Met Office issues cold weather alerts across the nation. With temperatures localy expected to plummet to -8°C this week and snow anticipated in various regions, authorities have raised concerns about the impact on health and social care services.
The Met Office, in conjunction with the Government’s UK Health Security Agency, has placed four northern regions – Cumbria with the rest of the north-west, north-east, Yorkshire, and The Humber – under an Amber Cold Weather alert. This cautionary measure will be in effect from 6 PM on November 28 until midday on December 5, as these areas prepare for Arctic-like conditions.
Officials warn of significant implications for the health and social care sector over the next seven days due to tumbling temperatures and wintry showers. The agencies have highlighted an increased risk of mortality, particularly among vulnerable groups, urging proactive measures to mitigate the impact.
A spokesperson from the UK Health Security Agency emphasized the forecasted cold spell, with sharp overnight frosts and limited daytime temperature recovery expected nationwide. While a weather system might bring rain to southern areas, the northern flank could see hill snow, with a low probability of snow reaching lower levels in southern England. Wintry showers are anticipated in North Sea coastal areas and high ground.
Dr. Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at the UK Health Security Agency, stressed the importance of checking on vulnerable family, friends, and relatives during such weather conditions, citing the serious health implications of the cold. He advised individuals with pre-existing medical conditions or those over 65 to maintain indoor temperatures at least at 18°C if possible.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Almond from the Met Office highlighted the wintry conditions expected, mentioning the likelihood of snow showers reaching sea level in the north on Monday and potentially extending southward by Tuesday. He anticipated weather warnings for Monday and Tuesday and advised the public to stay updated with the Met Office forecast due to the evolving situation, including freezing temperatures and the risk of ice.
