80mph Winds and Heavy Rain Causing Disruption to New Year Travel

Winds and rain are continuing to batter Cumbria along with rest of the North of England and Southern Scotland throughout the day and into the early hours of 2025.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations have been cancelled due to concerns over "extreme weather".

Organisers said high winds would force all outdoor events taking place on Monday and Tuesday to be scrapped, including the Hogmanay concert in Princes Street Gardens by the band Texas.

80mph winds are battering parts of Cumbria with gusts recorded along parts of the A66 at lunch time today (31st December) of 82mph.

National Highways have again closed the A66 between Penrith and Scotch Corner to high sided vehicles.

Heavy rain is also leading to some localised flooding on roads including the A6 between Hackthorpe and Shap.

National Rail says amber and yellow weather warnings for rain, snow and wind across the UK may impact services until Thursday 2 January.

In a statement issued this morning, the rail operator says the weather is forecast "to be the worst today, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day" and advises customers to check before they travel.
