1 month to go until new Westmorland and Furness Council replaces Eden Council.

There's just one month to go until Westmorland and Furness council takes the reins from Cumbria County Council, South Lakeland District Council, Barrow Borough Council and Eden District Council.

The 1st of April 2023 will represent the biggest single change to local government in Cumbria since 1974.
The changes will see the end of Cumbria as a local government county area along with the current 6 district areas.
Penrith will along with rest of Eden find itself part of the new Westmorland and Furness county and district Penrith and parts of Eden before 1974 formed part of the original county of Cumberland.

The council have said “there's lots of work going on in the background to make sure everything is handed over safely and services remain uninterrupted”

Westmorland and Furness council will be giving an update shortly about what's happening with certain services from April 1.

The Westmorland and Furness Councils shadow cabinet held a meeting held last Friday at Barrow town hall.
Cabinet members received an updated on the councils day 1 requirements readiness status the council was established in a shadow for since May 2022 to complete is currently only at 62.6% of all the programme currently achieved. 

Although all current council staff and most officers from the existing councils will be transferred to the new council under a TUPE arrangement.
the new council had recently advertised for a number of roles including director of public health and a number of roles including social workers.
