Funded by the National Lottery, thousands of people across Cumbria have received a letter from a group of Cumbria organisations including the two unitary authorities, inviting them to take part in a Cumbria Climate Assembly which will bring around 40 randomly selected residents together in March and April 2025 to develop recommendations to help shape decisions which affect climate change in Cumbria.
Participants will be randomly selected by lottery from those who apply, so that the organisers can ensure a representative mix of voices from across Cumbria. Those taking part will hear from expert speakers, share their views and work together through several face and face and online sessions to develop ideas for Cumbria’s future. As a thank-you for their time, participants will receive £350 in shopping vouchers.
Karen Mitchell, CEO of Cumbria Action for Sustainability, one of the supporters of the initiative, says: ‘The Assembly is open to people from all walks of life, not just climate experts or campaigners. It’s a rare opportunity for people to influence decisions that affect their community. No prior knowledge of climate change or politics is needed—just a willingness to share experiences and opinions. Everyone who has received a letter is encouraged to apply before the deadline of 9th February. We’re particularly keen that younger residents aged 16 to 35 get involved.’
The Cumbria Climate Assembly is being facilitated by Shared Future CIC, an independent, not-for-profit organisation with extensive experience running Citizens’ Assemblies and Juries across the UK. The work has been commissioned on behalf of the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership, a multi-partner initiative led by Cumbria Action for Sustainability and University of Cumbria which is supported by funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.
