As the clock struck midnight the new Westmorland and Furness Council officially replaced Eden Distrcit Council and Cumbria County council as the local authority covering Penrith along with the rest of what until midnight was Eden, South Lakeland and Barrow district and borough areas.
Cumbria as a local government county along with the 6 districts are all now officially scrapped as the clock struck midnight and replaced by two new county and districts with the districts covering the same footprint as the new local government counties of Cumberland to the west and Westmorland and Furness covering the east of the former local government county of Cumbria.
An official proclamation is to take place on Saturday at 1pm in Penrith.
A town crier will read the official proclamation announcing the arrival of the new Westmorland and Furness Council to the town at the band stand.
