After a disappointing cancellation in 2022, the Skelton Show committee has made a remarkable comeback and is determined to make this year's event the most memorable one to date.
With exhibitors and traders eagerly booking their spots, preparations are well underway for the highly anticipated Skelton Show, scheduled for the Saturday 1st of July.
The Skelton Show, known as the largest village show in the North of England, has a rich history spanning 127 years. With over 10,000 attendees, the show offers exhibitors the chance to compete for a substantial prize pool of over £13,500 and 130 trophies across Cattle, Sheep, Dogs, and Horse classes. This year, the show's nominated charity is the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
This year has seen some changes with the show’s committee bidding farewell to Mick and Jane Crocker, who have dedicated eighteen years of service, the committee has said they “extends heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering commitment and hard work. Filling their esteemed positions”.
Mary Wilson, a farmer's wife from Hardrigg Hall, Ellonby, has taken on the role of Livestock Secretary, supported by her daughter, Amy.
The shows new Livestock Steward is Derek Wilson.
Another addition to the committee is Jackie Storey from Kirklinton, who has assumed the role of Equine Secretary.
Excited about the opportunity, Jackie expresses her anticipation for working with the Skelton Show team and contributing to a fantastic and enjoyable day. Having cherished fond memories of attending the show as a child with her grandfather, who showcased Clydesdale horses, Jackie aims to make this year's event exceptional. She reveals that the show will feature HCR qualifiers for ex-racehorses, with Denise Richardson Rowell as the judge for the class. Furthermore, the Eileen Richardson Memorial Trophy will be presented to the winner of the Cob/Riding/ex-racehorse category, in memory of Denise's late mother. Paul Richardson will have the honor of judging the prestigious Champion of Champions award.
Growing up in a farming and equine-oriented family in Northumberland, Jackie and her husband Brian have not only judged at numerous renowned shows nationally and in Ireland but have also competed with ex-racehorses on a national level. Jackie's involvement in the farm, which includes caring for sheep and horses, as well as her license as a dog breeder, further demonstrates her deep-rooted connection to the agricultural and equine worlds.
Collaborating with Jackie on organizing this year's show are Rachel Bastow, who provides administrative support in the lead-up to the event, and Adam Fawcett, the Head Steward in the equine area.
Skelton Show continues to hold on to its agricultural heritage, but the show has embraced evolution to ensure an experience for all attending the 2023 Skelton Show.
The Food and Entertainment village promises a diverse array of food and drink options, accompanied by live entertainment throughout the afternoon and early evening.

Chairman Colin Atkinson emphasizes that “traditional agricultural aspects remain at the heart of the Skelton Show.” He proudly shared that, "In addition to the large selection of cattle, horses, dogs, and sheep, there is a marquee brimming with classes for children, cooking, painting, floral arts, vegetables, and walking sticks.
The extensive @TasteSkelton Food and Gifts and Crafts tents offer a wide range of local produce to savor and purchase. Other attractions include the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling competition, pony sports, and numerous trade stands."
Looking ahead with great anticipation, Show Director John Slee promises “an action-packed day filled with entertainment and enjoyment. The main ring will feature the fearless and astounding On the Edge motorcycle stunt team, offering an exhilarating experience. In contrast, the Concours d'Elegance equestrian display will provide a more serene and elegant showcase. Additional highlights include the popular Scurry Racing, Ullswater Community College Cheerleaders' performance, and the fun-filled Terrier Racing spectacles. Slee expresses gratitude to the army of volunteers who will ensure the smooth running of the show and extends his appreciation to all those who have committed to assist this year.”
The evolution of Skelton Show will this year see a new addition to the Show as the shows not over on Saturday night as the 'Sunday Funday' event, will be taking place on the showfield from 1 pm on Sunday, 2nd July.
The Skelton Show Sunday Funday is geared toward families, the event will feature live bands, street food, a darts competition, tug-of-war contests, a fun fair, and games for children.
Admission for the 'Sunday Funday' is set at £5 per person, with children accompanied by an adult gaining free entry.
Early Bird offers are available for tickets purchased online via the show's official website during early June. Tickets for the 'Sunday Funday' can also be purchased online.

There is free parking at the show but you can leave the car at home and jump on the free show bus operated by Fellrunner.
The show committee have said they are very grateful to the Fellrunner for providing this complimentary service although they will be seeking donations from passengers to help with fuel costs.
The Fellrunner Bus will depart from 10.30am to 2.00pm leaving Penrith Bus Station with a pick up by Esso Garage on Scotland Road. Returning every half hour with the last bus back from the Showfield at 5pm.
