Public advised to keep away from the site of flytipping of a piles of black bags dumped just yard from junction 39 of the M6 on the B6261 Orion road junction that has only just reopened this week with local businesses and residents celebrating the reopening of the road following months of closures due to electric cable installation works.
It had emerged that the black bags dumped on the roadside contain hazardous waste materials containing contaminated biohazard medical waste materials.
The bags ripped open by wildlife and the weather have exposed approximately twenty containers containing needles and other contaminated materials dumped on the roadside just yards from the M6 at junction 39.
Westmorland and Furness council are aware of the incident and are in the process of arranging for their removal.
Westmorland and Furness Council’s Senior Environmental Enforcement Officer inspected the site on Wednesday to assess the situation and plan for the removal of the hazardous waste dumped alongside the B6261.
However, due to the hazardous medical waste the council will require a specialist contractor to remove it delaying the removal of the hazardous waste.
The public are advised to keep away from them in the meantime and keep pets and animals clear of the hazardous waste materials.
