Police use HGV cab as part of Operation Tramline to improve road safety in Cumbria

Cumbria Police utilised a specially-equipped HGV cab as part of its road safety efforts on Cumbria's roads last week.

The latest deployment of Operation Tramline in the county took place last week between 22 Sept and 25 Sept as part of the Constabulary's work to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.

Tramline is a dedicated road safety operation using a specially-equipped, unmarked, HGV cab which provides an elevated position for police officers to spot road offences.

Offences identified included eight involving mobile phones as well as other offences including not using a seatbelt, speeding, insecure load and driving with serious defects.

The operation also saw a wanted individual arrested, identified a vehicle reversing the wrong way up a motorway slip road and a driver behind the wheel without a license.

Inspector Holly Lockwood of Cumbria Police's Roads Policing Unit said: "The specially-equipped HGV puts out officers in an elevated position from which to spot poor driving behaviour which has the potential to result in serious collisions.

"We are fortunate to be able to use this national asset to improve road safety on our roads and we know it is having the desired impact via the number of drivers who are aware of the operation after we have stopped them.

"We will continue to use all resources available to us in our effort to target those people whose driver behaviour puts all road users at risk."

Cumbria Constabulary continues to encourage all road users to play their part in reducing collisions by remaining focused on the road, wearing a seatbelt and complying with road traffic laws at all times.

Cumbria's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said: "Dangerous and anti-social driving is an issue that is raised with me time and time again by residents.

"Operation Tramline is a brilliant initiative to help catch those committing roads offences – there is no hiding dangerous behaviour when officers can spot it from a high vantage point.

"The message is clear: if you are driving in a dangerous or anti-social manner in Cumbria, you will be caught and face the consequences. Don't assume that just because you cannot see the Police that they are not there.

"Cumbria Constabulary police our roads year-round to keep dangerous drivers off our roads and to keep us safe but we all have our part to play. I'd urge motorists to drive safely whether you are on the motorway or a country road – we all must respect the laws and one another and everyone deserves to get home safe."
