Police in Penrith seized drugs and multiple canisters of nitrous oxide after surrounding a vehicle on Brunswick Road.
Officers were called following a report from a concerned member of the public who suspected the driver may have been under the influence when the vehicle was in the vicinity of McDonald’s. The incident marked the 137th call-out of the day for local police.
Multiple police vehicles responded to the scene, stopping the car and conducting a search under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, after receiving information that the occupants were seen smoking cannabis.
During the search, a bag of cannabis was found on one individual, and approximately 30 bottles of nitrous oxide were recovered from inside the vehicle.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas", is classified as a Class C controlled substance when used for its psychoactive effects, according to Home Office guidance.
It is understood that the vehicle was carrying four young male occupants, who are currently assisting police with their enquiries.
The incident resulted in some congestion and delays to traffic on Ullswater Road and Brunswick Road this after with drivers reporting delays of around 30 minutes.
