Police and Town Council Issue Warnings of Fines and Dangers to Drivers as Town Centre Road Closes.

Northern Gas Networks are upgrading the gas infrastructure underneath some of the main roads through Penrith, resulting in road closures.

On the first day of the closures with phase 1 closing Middlegate and Brunswick Road from 3rd January - 26th January to vehicles with advanced warning signs from J40 down the A6 into Penrith now in place.

Penrith Town Council and Police have issued warning to drivers who are ignoring road closed signs and diversions.

Penrith Town Council on Wednesday afternoon said, “It has been brought to our attention that some vehicles are not following the official diversion routes set up whilst the gas works are taking in place in the town centre.”

“Cars have been noted going the wrong way down Brunswick Terrace which is a danger to pedestrians and other road users.”

Cumbria Police have said “do not go through the No entry signs on to Brunswick Square - this is an offence for which you may receive a fine.”

Official diversion routes for the works divert vehicles along Beacon Edge or alternatively along Portland Place, Sandgate and Friargate.
