Plans submitted to create a new fitness centre at Newton Rigg

Plans have been submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council for the Change of use of existing buildings to create a new fitness centre in the former conference centre at Newton Rigg as part of the regeneration of the former college site.

Westmorland and Furness Council recently approved plans to create a new padel court on site, alongside other sporting facilities on the site already in regular use including a sports hall and 3G pitches.

The proposed new fitness centre if approved would be across two levels providing a 9,150 sq ft (825 sqm) exercise and wellness facilities, With two large fitness suites on the ground floor and three classrooms for fitness groups on the upper floor.

Following the closure and purchase in 2021 by the Leo Group, work has been underway to regenerate the former college campus with a variety of organisations now occupying buildings and parts of the estate including the World Owl Trust, Fibrus, Cumbrian Local Radio and the Cumbria Institute of Sport just some of the organisations now based at Newton Rigg.

Some of the former student accommodation has also been refurbished to create hotel accommodation along with a new 24/7 launders also recently opened on the site and plans recently approved for the redevelopment of the former refectory into a modern eatery and deli shop.
