Plans approved for new Pet and Equine Crematorium near Penrith

Plans have been approved to create a small pet and equine crematorium near Penrith through the change of two farm buildings to create the pet crematorium.

The change of use application submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council, by Penrith based Planning Branch Ltd on behalf of the applicants Birchwood Barn who also operate the Eden Valley Crematorium located near to the site of the proposed pet and equine crematorium.

The plans to transformation two buildings at Whinfell House Farm just off the A66 into two crematoriums one for small pets and one for horses have received planning approval by Westmorland and Furness Council planning officers.

Planning officers at Westmorland and Furness Council granting the planning application said “The crematorium will fulfil an existing need in the local area, providing a valuable service to local communities.”

“The Council’s Environmental Health team has reviewed the proposal and has raised no

objections with regard to potential smoke or odour nuisance. From reviewing the

specification information for the incinerators, it is noted that the secondary

chamber on the incinerators has been designed to ensure a clean, smoke and

odour free operation, and the operation of them does not raise confirm to trigger the

need for an odour assessment.”

“The proposed development is considered to be in accordance with the development plan which is not outweighed by material considerations and therefore the application is recommended for approval.”

The planning statement by the applicant said the facility will also provide a room within the building to allow vets to visit the site and euthanise animals on the site.

Planned Operating hours for the pet and equine crematorium will be 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with weekend by appointment.

The agent for the applicant said the site “would provide a community facility that does not existing within the Eden area and thus avoids the need for residents of Eden to travel to either Carlisle or South Lakeland areas.”

However, the owner of another local pet crematorium located North of Penrith at Armathwaite wrote to the council to highlight the incorrect statement by the agent in the application.

Mr Ricketts who owns “Paws to Rest” Pet Bereavement Service located near Armathwaite that has operated for 34 Years.

Said his business “already fulfils the aforementioned requirement, being mid-way between Penrith & Carlisle and is a founder and accredited Member of the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries & Crematoria”.

Mr Ricketts added “We also operate a pet cemetery. Where, not only are complete pets buried, but the ashes of those left for cremation with other pets are interred. This is a comfort to those not able to afford individual cremation, but do not relish the thought of their loved ones remains being deposited in landfill”.

“We have had for a while, now our "Farewell" cabin, situated in pleasant garden surroundings, which caters for on site euthanasia. PtR is a family run establishment with the intention of it remaining that way. The business provides employment for 7 local people. Several of whom have been in our employ for over 20 years. We carry out collections from veterinary practices and private homes, where required”.

“In our experience the small demand for an equine service, is adequately provided. Tastefully, by The Willows Pet Crematorium at Witton Gilbert, Durham, Abbeyfield Equine Cremations who cover vast areas of Northern England & Southern Scotland and Heavenly Pastures in Ormskirk, Lancashire.

“In general, there are already 3 pet crematoria to service the area. Paws to Rest, Armathwaite, Pets at Peace, Whitehaven Farewell Pet Crematorium in Annan”.

A letter of support was also submitted to the council by a member of the public from Skirwith who said “As a dog and horse owner, having a pet crematorium locally would give piece of mind that my deceased animal would not be travelling for miles before reaching the crematorium.”
