Penrith Ranked Number one destination for ‘staycationing’ by Train

This summer's number one destination for staycationing British tourists travelling by train is Penrith that according to data from Virgin Trains Ticketing, has seen bookings rise by 106 per cent to the town in the past six weeks. 

The Virgin Tains Ticketing data does not show the specific dates of travel that has driven the increase in bookings to Penrith.

However during the same period Penrith Station has seen large number of travellers heading to Kendal Calling, that attracted 40,000 people. Many of those heading to Kendal Calling opted to leave the car at home and travel by train, traveling to Penrith then using the Kendal Calling shuttle bus provided from the station forecourt direct to the festival at Lowther Deer park.

Along side Penrith five other destinations have also seen increase in ticket bookings in the same six week period.

Whitstable experienced the second-highest increase in train ticket bookings, with a 92 percent rise. 

Weston-super-Mare, had the third-highest increase in bookings, with an 85 percent increase. 

Edinburgh ranked fourth, also with an 85 percent rise in ticket sales.

Penzance in Cornwall came in fifth, with a 27 percent increase in train bookings. 

Brighton saw a 12 percent rise in train ticket bookings over the past six weeks.
