“Penrith is not in Westmorland and Furness” Protest at proclamation.

The proclamation of the new Westmorland and Furness council today in Penrith was not welcomed by some.

A peaceful protest was staged against the placing of Penrith in Westmorland and Furness and for a change of the boundary.

The protes resulted in the deputy leader of Westmorland and Furness council Penrith North Councillor Bell confronting the protest and was heard saying “that’s not very nice” and “I am very disappointed in this” speaking with the protester holding a placard Cllr Bell said “I will come and find you” before walking away.

The locating of Penrith in Westmorland and Furness with the links to the pre 1974 counties has seen a growing call for Penrith to be returned to Cumberland.

Todays protest is the latest in a series of objections and calls for a review of the boundaries and governance of Penrith.

A motion was recently put before Penrith Town Council calling for a community governance review on the subject of Penrith place in the new local government counties but town council members rejected the motion.

Evolve Penrith has recently launched a petition for a community governance review with a range of items including the options of Penrith returning to Cumberland.

Cheers of well done came from the small crowd at the proclamation in support of the protest in Penrith today.

What do you think should Penrith be returned to Cumberland?
