Penrith households will again pay more in Council tax from April than households in the same council tax band in Kendal and Barrow due to town council costs and precepts set by the town councils in Penrith, Kendal and Barrow.
At a meeting in Kendal next Thursday Westmorland and Furness Council will hold its Budget setting meeting with councillors recommended to approve the council’s budget for 2026/27 that is facing considerable financial pressures due to a substantial funding cut from government.
The meeting will also see the council approve the setting of
the council tax paid by households across the Westmorland and Furness Council
district.
The council tax is set to rise and Penrith households will face paying over £66.76
more than a Band D household in Barrow in Furness.
The higher amounts paid by Penrith Households is a result of the £526,749.50 precept set by Penrith Town Council to fund its budget costs for the next 12 months. Barrow Town Council has set a precept of £306,350.00, Kendal households will also pay around £16.10 less than Penrith households.
The Westmorland and Furness share of the council tax will
increase by 4.9% to cover the councils council tax requirements of £194.072
million towards the councils 2026/27 net budget of £301.124 million.
Along with a Band D property also paying Cumbria Police & Crime Commissioner
precept of £338.94 and a Cumbria Commissioner Fire and Rescue Authority precept
of £103.14
