Penrith and Eden set to loose out on thousands of pounds under Westmorland and Furness structure and plans

Westmorland and Furness cabinet is set to meet at Barrow Town Hall on Tuesday 6th of June to approve £5 million spending plan including £3.250 million of priority investment for the current financial year.

The cabinet is also set to approve a £1,000 per councillor scheme totalling £65,000 that will award £1,000 to each councillor to spend as they wish in the councillors ward.

Penrith has two Westmorland and Furness council wards Penrith North and Penrith South each with two councillors resulting in a total of only £4,000 pounds made available for Penrith from the £65,000 budget allocation and a total of only £16,000 for the whole of Eden with some wards only receiving £1,000 due to having only one councillor.

However Kendal will see £10,000 pounds received as a result of the town having 10 Westmorland and Furness councillors.

Barrow will receive £15,000 as a result of Barrow and Walney island having 15 councillors.

As part of the local government changes that took place on the 1st of April the number of councillors was reduced across the area with the former Eden Council area seeing the smiles number of councillors in the new council district covered by Westmorland and Furness with just 16 councillors compared to the former South Lakeland area that has 30 councillors and will see £30,000 awarded into the area, With the former Barrow council area also set to benefit from more funding through the scheme also.

What do you think about the allocation of funding by the new council in the area?
