New Town Councillor Elected Unopposed in Penrith West — Three Candidates Battle for Penrith South Seat

Voters in Penrith West will not head to the polls this month after only one nomination was received by the 4pm deadline on Friday afternoon the the Westmorland and Furness Council returning officer.

The only candidate nominated was the Liberal Democrat candidate who has been elected unopposed and will take up the vacant Penrith West seat on Penrith Town Council automatically.

Despite voters in Penrith West loosing out on voting for their new councillor, voters in Penrith South will go to the polls on Thursday 27th November to choose between three candidates — representing the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party, and Reform UK.

Both the newly elected Penrith West councillor and the successful Penrith South candidate will serve until May 2027, when all town council seats are due for re-election.

The vacancies follow the latest in a series of recent resignations from the Town Council since the last full elections in 2023.

Penrith West is currently represented by three councillors, but the Town Council will meet on Monday afternoon to consider a proposal to reduce the ward to two councillors, a recommendation expected to be put forward to Westmorland and Furness Council as part of an ongoing review.
