MP backs Penrith Swimming Club against leisure centre operators proposals to remove the Club’s Learn to Swim provision.

Penrith Swimming Club welcomed local MP Markus Campbell-Savours to Penrith Leisure Centre on Sunday, as the campaign continues against GLL’s proposals to remove the Club’s Learn to Swim provision.

Markus met swimmers, coaches and volunteers and heard first-hand why Learn to Swim is so important to the future of the 145-year-old club, providing the starting point for children to progress into competitive swimming and lifelong participation.

Following his visit, Markus publicly backed the campaign, saying he “absolutely supports Penrith Swimming Club”and encouraged the community to sign the petition.

The Club is not asking for GLL’s swimming lessons to stop. It is calling for both programmes to coexist, protecting family choice and the future of the Club.

A Club spokesperson said:

“We’re incredibly grateful to Markus for coming to listen to our members and for standing with us. We remain determined to find a positive solution that protects Learn to Swim and the future of Penrith Swimming Club.”

The campaign has now attracted more than 2,300 petition signatures, alongside support from Penrith Town Council and the wider community. Penrith Swimming Club asks for your support here.
