Local Political Party Calls for By Election to Fill Vacant Seat on Westmorland and Furness Council

Local Political party Putting Cumbria First has announced it has submitted the required request to Westmorland and Furness Council calling for a by election to fill the vacant Penrith South ward seat on Westmorland and Furness Council following the resignation last week of former Libdem councillor Virginia Taylor.

Deputy Chair of Putting Cumbria First Colin May said “given the current financial situation of Westmorland and Furness Council and the lack of representation for Penrith on the council shown by the lack on investment in the town currently from the pot hole filed roads to the town hall standing empty as a sad reminder of the £8.5 million wasted by the council on the monstrosity behind it at Voreda House.”

“Its time after four years since the last election for Westmorland and Furness Council that residents get to have a say in who represent them through a democratic by election. That is why we have today submitted the request calling of the by election.”

Westmorland and Furness Council Returning Officer in issuing the notice of the vacancy said “An election to fill the vacancy will be held within thirty-five days, following receipt of a request.”

Following the request submitted the by election is likely to take place in the first week of March to fill the seat following the resignation of the former Libdem councillor if the seat is contested by more than one candidate standing for election once called by the returning officer.
