Historic First for Skelton Show as First Female Chairman Elected Ahead of 128th Show

Historic first for Skelton Show that has been running since 1881 and grown from a small local show held in Skelton village to one of the major agricultural shows in Cumbria. Now held on the first Saturday in July in the picturesque setting of the Old Park at Hutton in the Forest near Penrith.

Skelton Show is run by a committee of volunteers and exists to promote the interests of those engaged in horticulture, farming and agriculture by providing facilities for competition, the sharing of information and best practice. 

On Tuesday evening the Skelton show Committee held its Annual General Meeting at the Toppin Memorial Hall in Skelton with a packed room of members attending. Skelton Show AGM broke historic new ground ahead of its 128th shown. 

Members elected a new Chairman who will hold office for four years with the members electing the shows first female chairman to the role in the shows 143 years.

Members elected Nina Oxley as Chairman of Skelton Show as it prepares to hold its 128th show that was described as the best agricultural show in Cumbria.

Nina said: "I’d like to thank the committee for nominating me and I accept my position for the next three years. It is a privilege to be the first woman Chairman in the show’s long history and I hope with the continued support of everyone, I will maintain the high standard set as well as bring new ideas and thoughts to the table.  It is a wonderful agricultural show and I’m very proud to be part of it.”

 

Outgoing Chairman Colin Atkinson, who has seen the show through what he described a difficult period with highs and lows over the last four years with the pandemic preventing two shown in 2020 and 2021 and Weather causing the cancellation hours before the gates opened in 2022 through to the show hosting what has been described as one of its best years to date with the 2023 Skelton shown held last July.

Colin thanked the committee and the show volunteers that help deliver Skelton Show and congratulated Nina and said he looked forward to continuing to support the show for many more years to come.

Nina thanked the committee and members and said she looked forward to delivering the best Skelton show yet this year with the committee and volunteers.

Skelton Show will take place on Saturday 6th July 2024 hosted in the Old Park, Hutton in the Forest.
