Following Wednesday nights devastating fire in Penrith Town Centre we speak with two of the group of young hero’s who raised the alarm

Just before 9pm two fire engines from Penrith were mobilised to a well developed fire at a Barbers shop in Penrith.

On arrival Cumbria Fire services were told there were a number of people still trapped inside and someone on the roof shouting for help.

The officer in charge requested a further three fire engines from Lazonby, Shap, and Appleby, an Ariel ladder platform from Barrow and the Joint incident command unit from Workington along with assistance from Northwest Ambulance Service.

Cumbria Police rapidly closed of the streets around Penrith Town Centre and evacuated people from the area.

Fire crews worked simultaneously to extinguish the fire and also search for any people still trapped inside the property and flats above.

Crews worked extremely hard under very difficult circumstances until all people were accounted for and the fire was extinguished.

Unfortunately the barbers shop was completely destroyed by fire but fire crews were able to stop the fire spreading to neighbouring properties.

There were no injuries to any of the public involved in the incident.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue services have said “We would like to thank the neighbouring businesses for assisting us in dealing with this incident and also the George Hotel for supplying food and drinks for us throughout the night.”

However before the emergency services had arrived the swift actions of group of young hero’s raised the alarm and helped get some of,the residents in the flats alerted and out of the rapidly growing fire below them.

We spoke with Robbie Felton and Jenson Williams two of a group of young people involved.
