Favilla is a new restaurant set to open its doors in Penrith next week, from Carlisle business Smoke and Steel, that offers a unique, rustic, live-fire outdoor catering and dining experience.
Smoke and Steel was born out of the owners’ own experience while searching for a wedding caterer back in 2017. Wanting something unique and rustic for their big day, chef Ash decided that great food—such a huge part of their lives—deserved his personal touch. Inspired by a passion for cooking over fire, he took matters into his own hands, bringing the excitement of flame, smoke, and glowing embers into a bistro-style setting that feels relaxed and welcoming.
In February, the team announced plans to take over the former Salsa restaurant in Penrith. After months of work to give the space their signature Smoke and Steel touch, Favilla is now set to light up Penrith with its unique dining experience—serving big flavours and seasonal ingredients, cooked simply and well, with the drama of fire at its heart. Guests can expect great food in a laid-back, stylish space right here in town.
The name Favilla comes from the Latin word meaning “a glowing ember” or “spark” — a fitting choice for a restaurant built around the heart of what Smoke and Steel stand for with food brought to life by flame, smoke, and passion.
A spokesperson for the restaurant said:
“We started fire cooking because, at the age of 25, we simply didn’t have the finances to secure the bricks and mortar that come with a restaurant. So we did what we could with the bare minimum and have grafted Smoke & Steel into what it is today.”
“Smoke & Steel will very much stay as it is and continue doing what it does best. We’ll now have Salsa doing its thing too—as it has for many years—with a bit of Smoke & Steel spice sprinkled on top.”
“Favilla will be inspired by our love for cooking over fire. Our menus will be underpinned by flames, smoke, and embers, bringing these elements into a laid-back yet refined setting for you to enjoy. As ever, our food will be all about big flavours and seasonal ingredients, cooked simply and well—elevated by fire and smoke.”
