Double Dose of Steam for Crowds at Penrith Station

Crowds lined the platforms at Penrith station on Saturday as two steam trains paid a visit.

The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe pulling distinctive orginal Pullman cars pulled into Platform 3 at Penrith Station this morning on its journey North to Carlisle having departed Birmingham New Street at 06:56 with passengers served a full English Breakfast onboard.

The return trip was scheduled to depart Carlisle heading South via Penrith at 15:05 with passengers served a full four-course evening dinner along with tea & coffee.

The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe steam locomotive was built in March 1936. originally named Barbury Castle, it was renamed Earl of Mount Edgcumbe in September 1937. The engine joined todays journey at Carnforth taking the Pullman cars North over Shap fells and into Penrith station for a short stop to allow schedules passenger trains to pass on ahead.

The crowd gathered at Penrith station did not have long to wait for the second steam train of the day to whistle through the station with the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express pulled by Tangmere passing through the station a Battle of Britain class locomotive named after a military airfield in Sussex, entered service in September 1947.

Passengers departed London Euston 06:55 with the steam engine also joining the journey at Carnforth taking passengers North to Carlisle before heading south via the Settle to Carlisle line on its return journey to London Euston.
