Cumbria Devolution and Mayor on cards as Council Leader joins Mayors from across the North in York

Westmorland and Furness Council look to devolution deal as council leader to ask council cabinet to consider giving delegation to the Leader of the decision to submit an expression of interest for further discussion on devolution with government.

Members of the Westmorland and Furness Cabinet will meet in Dalton in Furness on Tuesday and be asked to give delegated powers to Cllr Jonathan Brook as Leader of the council to make the decision on when to submit then council’s expression of interest in progressing discussions with government that could ultimately see a new Cumbria combined authority created potentially with a directly elected mayor.

Cumbria is now the only area of the North without a devolution deal either agreed or in the process of agreement.

Cllr Brook was in York today (Wednesday 4th September) attending the launch of the manifesto for the North Mayors and leaders of other authorities that all have devolution deals many with directly elected mayors already in office.

Tracy Brabin Mayor of West Yorkshire speaking on today event said “Today is a new dawn for the North.”

“For the first time, its mayors and leaders have come together for a summit to decide, for ourselves, what we want for the over 15 million people we represent.”

David Skaith North Yorkshire Mayor said “An honour to welcome fellow Mayors and leaders to York today to launch the Manifesto for the North, a great opportunity to work collectively across the North to deliver for the people we represent.”

If the Westmorland and Furness cabinet grant delegation to the Leader he will then hold the delegated powers allowing him to decide on whether or not to express an interest for further devolution discussions that could potentially lead to the creation of a new combined authority that would likely be with Cumberland to serve as a Cumbria Combined Authority.

It’s understood officers at Cumberland Council are leading on similar preparations for Cumberland Council that are expected to see delegated powers to be granted to the Cumberland council leader later this month also. Although the Cumberland Council leader was not present at the Mayor and Leader’s event in York on Wednesday.
