Councillor Threatens to Run Wheelie Bin Over as Update On Penrith Wheelie Bin Trial Given to Meeting

Members of the Westmorland and Furness Eden locality board meeting at Voreda House on Wednesday evening received an update on the councils Wheelie Bin trials in Penrith.

Councillors were updated on the trial that 500 bins have been delivered to households in the Carleton Meadows area of Penrith with only one household refusing a wheelie bin saying they will continue with blue bags and take them to the house hold waste site a flusco themselves.

The first waste collection of the wheelie bins in the trial area will take place on Thursday.

Cllr Simpkims raised the issue of the black bins and highways safety concerns saying they will be hard to see and get hit by cars and asked could they not be another colour instead.

Council officers said the black grey colour was a common wide used one for general waste bins and used in other parts of the district and the UK successfully already.

Cllr Simpkims responded “I will make sure I hit one next time I am in south lakes to prove the point then.”

Cllr Eyles asked about properties with lots of steps and options officers said they were looking already at bigger communal bins for flats and groups of properties with lots of steps.

Cllr Atkinson asked if the bins would be rolled out to all households or if rural communities would still face a two tier waste service as they do with garden waste currently in areas of Eden.

Officers responded that following the trials and the completion of the waste council services review they hoped a harmonised waste service would be implemented from Walney to Alston so all households across the Westmorland and Furness District have the same waster service.

The council officers asked that any residents in the trial area who have not received a new wheelie bin to get in contact with the council and anyone with issues that require assisted collections could contact the council to request support.
