Westmorland and Furness Councils former Deputy Chair Cllr Ali Jama was elected to the new Council in 2022 as a member of the libdem Party, as councillor for the Upper Kent ward were he now serves as an independent after a fallout with the group in March 2025 over poor meeting attendance.
Since his election to Westmorland and Furness Council in 2022 Cllr Jama has failed to attend 61% of meetings he was expected to attend.
Cllr Jama was not present at the February council tax and budget setting meeting of the council on February 26th when the council set the 4.99% council tax increase.
Westmorland and Furness Council has now confirmed that as of March 2026 Cllr Jama was the only serving Westmorland and Furness councillor in arrears with his council tax payments to Westmorland and Furness Council.
Despite the failure to attend over 61% of meetings and the council tax arrears Cllr Jama remains entitled to his £13,837.50 basic councillor allowance for the year.
