Council Announce Removal of All Public Car Parking at Mansion House

Following the council's decision to place Mansion House on the market, Westmorland and Furness Council have announced they are taking steps to secure the site. This will involve removing all public access to the car parks at the front and rear of Mansion House.

The car parks will be closed from Tuesday 5th May 2026 follows the amendment of a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to remove the off-street parking provisions in the carparks that has been in place since November 2025.

The securing of the site by the council will be limited to the period of the marketing of the property and completion of any sale, with the new owner taking any future decision as to how best to secure the site once the sale is completed.

Part of the rear car park at the rear of Mansion House will be retained by the Council following the sale and options will be considered as to how best to bring it back into use after the sale is completed.

The council put Mansion House on the market in March as a surplus assets following previous attempts to sell the property by the former Eden District council
The property was initially purchased by Penrith Rural District Council in 1919 and later inherited by the former Eden District Council with ownership passing to Westmorland and Furness Council in 2023.

Walton Goodland, commercial property specialist based in Carlisle, is overseeing the sale and is offering the property for sale by informal tender with unconditional offers invited by the 21st May 2026 AT 12 noon.
