Network Rail will Today (Wednesday 9th July) will see a major milestone achieved with its Clifton Westcoast mainline bridge replacement project.
Over the last 5 months Network Rail have been creating a construction compound for the new replacement bridge that will replace the existing Westcoast main line across the M6 at Clifton that has deteriorated and no longer meets modern standards.
From Wednesday morning the compound site alongside the M6 will receive the first steel bridge sections that have been fabricated over the last year in Glasgow.
Over the next few weeks all the sections of the new bridge will be delivered to the compound where work will then get underway to join them all together to form the new bridge deck.
In January 2026 following the closure of the Westcoast mainline for two weeks the existing bridge will be demolished and the new bridge constructed from the steel sections will be moved into place using large multi wheeled platforms.
The bridge sections will be transported via the M6 south to junction 39 in order for the HGV to turn around to head north to the compound at Clifton under escort between J39 and Clifton.
The replacement of the bridge will alongside the 16 day closure of the Westcoast mainline also see a full closure North and Southbound on the M6 over the weekends of 2 – 5 and 9 – 12 January 2026 with the current bridge demolished on the first weekend closure and the new bridge moved into place on the second weekend closure.
