Bid to Establish Community Group in Castletown

A bid to establish a community group in Castletown is to take a step forward on Monday with a community meeting taking place at Castletown Community Centre at 6pm.
The meeting has been organised by Penrith West town councillor Jeff Thomson following a meeting in July that over 100 residents attended.
Now, he is to hold a second meeting with the aim of setting-up a formal 'Fresh AIR for Penrith Community Group'.
Cllr Thomson said “Local communities should be consulted when councils make their planning decisions.”
He claims there are too many instances where planners say 'yes' with little or no consultation with local residents.
"People in Penrith, particularly those living and working in the west of town, including Castletown, have suffered years of odour pollution, commonly known as the Penrith 'pong'.
"There have been petitions, complaints, questions, statements and objections, involving councils, MP, the Environment Agency and industries including the Omega Proteins animal rendering plant operator," said Thomson.
"With a formal community group in place, the councils, agencies and polluter, will be forced to consult and listen to local residents, particularly over planning and permit applications," said Thomson.
All local residents are invited to attend the meeting that will be held on Monday, September 18, at Castletown Community Centre, Gilwilly Industrial Estate, Penrith, starting 6pm.
